⚽⛳ The History of Foot Golf

Foot Golf, the sport that merges the power of football with the precision and etiquette of golf, is a relatively modern phenomenon, gaining international recognition rapidly in the last decade.

Origins and Early Concepts

While the official, organized version of Foot Golf emerged in the Netherlands, the concept of kicking a ball into a hole on a course has earlier roots:

Early Precursors (1980s - 2000s): The idea of a foot-based golf game was experimented with in various countries, with some claiming early forms existed in the US and the Netherlands, primarily as a casual activity played on existing golf courses or open fields.

Codeball (1920s): A similar sport called Codeball, invented in Chicago in 1929, involved kicking a ball towards a target. While not directly linked, it shows the general concept has been explored before.

The Official Birth (The Netherlands, 2009)

The sport as we know it today, with standardized rules and a proper structure, is largely attributed to the Netherlands:

The Founders: Michael Jansen, a former professional football player, and Bas Korsten are credited with perfecting the game and giving it the name "Foot Golf." The first official tournament was played in the Netherlands in 2009.

The Rules: The founders adapted the core rules of golf—such as etiquette, counting strokes, and navigating hazards—to be played using a regulation-size football (size 5) kicked by the foot into custom-made holes (usually 50-53cm in diameter) placed on a golf course.

Global Expansion and Organization

Following its formal launch, Foot Golf quickly gained traction around the world, primarily due to its accessibility and low barrier to entry:

International Federation: The Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) was founded, which oversees the global development of the sport, sets the official rules, and organizes international competitions.

World Cups: The sport began hosting major global events, including the Foot Golf World Cup, which saw growing international participation from countries like Hungary (hosting the first one in 2012), Argentina, and Morocco.

Growth in Portugal: Foot Golf has established itself firmly in Portugal, with the country creating its own national association (APFG) and hosting international tournaments, particularly benefiting from the large number of existing golf courses in regions like the Algarve.

Today, Foot Golf is played in over 35 countries, offering a fun and competitive fusion that appeals to both sports enthusiasts and casual players alike.
