🛒 Algarve Municipal Markets 🥦🥔 🍎

The main Municipal Markets in the Algarve, such as those in Loulé, Olhão, Faro, Portimão, and Lagos, offer a daily selection of fresh local produce, regional specialties, meat, and especially fresh fish and seafood, typically operating Monday through Saturday mornings.

Os emblemáticos Mercados de Olhão foram construídos no ano de 1915, com o objetivo de modernizar o comércio e os setores produtivos agrícola e pesqueiro da região.  Estes edifícios, um para o peixe e outro para a fruta/legumes, tornaram-se um centro de comércio vital e um dos ex-libris arquitetónicos da cidade, tendo sido reabertos em 1998 após profundas obras de requalificação.
Os emblemáticos Mercados de Olhão foram construídos no ano de 1915, com o objetivo de modernizar o comércio e os setores produtivos agrícola e pesqueiro da região. Estes edifícios, um para o peixe e outro para a fruta/legumes, tornaram-se um centro de comércio vital e um dos ex-libris arquitetónicos da cidade, tendo sido reabertos em 1998 após profundas obras de requalificação.

O Mercado Municipal da Avenida, em Lagos, foi inaugurado em 1925, com a sua construção a decorrer entre 1923 e 1924, e inicialmente era conhecido como Mercado Central de Frutas. O edifício foi erigido no local onde antes existia a Fábrica da Porta de Portugal (destruída num incêndio), e destinava-se a centralizar a venda de frutas e legumes, complementando os mercados de peixe e hortaliças que existiam na Rua da Porta de Portugal.

Typical Fruits and Vegetables of the Algarve 🥬🥕 🍓🍎

Citrus — The region's great specialty. Algarve oranges (especially from Silves) are available from November to April, while tangerines appear from October to February. Lemons can be found virtually year-round.


Melon and Watermelon — Summer, from June to September. 

Figs — An emblematic fruit, available fresh from July to September. Dried figs are produced all year. 


Arbutus berries (Medronho) — Autumn fruit (October to December), the base for the famous regional brandy. 


Grapes — Harvest in August and September. 

Almonds — The flowering in January/February is iconic. The fruit is harvested in August and September. 


Pomegranates — Available from September to November. 


Carob — Harvest between August and October. Used in traditional confectionery and as a chocolate substitute.
