SUSTAINABLE ALGARVE

The Algarve is famous for its golden cliffs and 300 days of sunshine, but beyond the postcard views lies a fragile ecosystem that needs our care. As more people choose to call this region home, "living the dream" now comes with a responsibility: preserving the very beauty that brought us here.

Transitioning to a sustainable lifestyle in the Algarve isn't just about "being green"—it's about smarter living, saving money, and integrating with the local culture.

 Winter: The Dehumidifier

Tip: Stay comfortable in winter: In the Algarve, relative humidity easily reaches 80-90% during the colder months. Use a dehumidifier to prevent mold, protect electronics, and make heating your home much easier. Dry air heats up faster than humid air!

Local Markets and Supermarkets (Km 0) Tip: Encourage the purchase of seasonal fruits and vegetables directly from local producers. In addition to supporting the regional economy, it drastically reduces the carbon footprint of transportation and avoids the excess of plastic packaging from supermarkets.

Summer: Thermal Management (Blinds)

Tip: Lower the blinds before the sun hits the glass to avoid the greenhouse effect. At night, open opposite windows to create cross-ventilation.

Following this strategy can reduce the internal temperature of the house by up to 5°C or 6°C.

Small Gestures Against Drought

Tip: Install flow restrictors on taps and showers and, above all, adopt the habit of reusing water from washing vegetables to water plants on the balcony or garden. It's a simple gesture, but one that resonates strongly with the necessary culture of preservation in the Algarve.

The Mediterranean Garden (Xeriscape)

Tip: Encourage the transition to xeriscape (low-water gardening). Replace the lawn with native plants such as lavender, rosemary, pepper trees, or succulents, and use mulch (pine bark) or gravel to retain soil moisture.

Soft Mobility: The Coastal Ecovia

Tip: Promote the use of the Coastal Ecovia (part of EuroVelo 1). Use a bicycle or walk for short trips between villages. It's a way to reduce emissions and, at the same time, discover paths that ordinary tourists never see.

Living in Harmony with the South

💧 Water: Our Most Precious Resource

In Southern Portugal, water is gold. With increasing periods of drought, sustainability starts at the tap.

Native Gardening: Swap thirsty lawns for Mediterranean plants like lavender, rosemary, and succulents. They look stunning and survive on minimal water.

The "Greywater" Habit: Simple gestures, like collecting the water used to wash vegetables to water your balcony plants, make a massive difference when multiplied by thousands of residents.

The AlgarveNow Pledge: Sustainability isn't a destination; it's a journey of small, daily choices. By respecting the water, the land, and the local pace of life, we ensure the Algarve remains a paradise for generations to come.

🚲 Mobility: Beyond the Car

The Algarve is often seen as a car-dependent region, but the Ecovia do Litoral is changing the narrative. This cycling and walking path stretches across the coast, offering a carbon-free way to commute between towns while enjoying breathtaking Atlantic views. Choosing a bike for short errands isn't just eco-friendly; it's the best way to avoid summer traffic.

🏠 Smart Homes, Naturally

Before reaching for the Air Conditioning remote, look at your shutter (estores). The traditional Portuguese method of closing shutters during the day and creating cross-breezes at night is a masterclass in passive cooling. It keeps your home comfortable for free and reduces the strain on the power grid.

🍅 Conscious Consumption: The Power of the "Mercado"

Skip the plastic-wrapped produce of big supermarkets. The heart of Algarve sustainability beats in the Mercados Municipais.

Km 0 Living: Buying seasonal fruit and fish directly from local producers reduces transport emissions and supports the regional economy.

Tradition is Trendy: Embracing the local way of eating—seasonal, fresh, and local—is the ultimate sustainable act.
